A MeetaNeed Story

She waited 14 years on the donor registry, then her stem cells saved a stranger

Megan Thomas of Mobile, Alabama, joined the National Marrow Donor Program registry in 2009. After more than a decade of waiting, her stem cells saved a stranger. The call came in April 2023 and the donation followed that June. FOX10 News in Mobile reported the story in July 2026, after the two women met.

In April 2023 she was told she matched a woman with leukemia who urgently needed a stem cell transplant. She was not told the woman’s name or where she lived. She knew only that the woman was about her own age.

Before donating, Thomas took medication to raise her stem cell count. Then she traveled to South Florida.

On June 6, 2023, Megan Thomas donated four bags of stem cells. A week later, Shelly Long of Nebraska received the transplant.

Under the program’s rules, a donor and a recipient cannot learn each other’s identities for one year. The two women later found each other on Facebook. In June 2026 they met in person in Florida, and their families vacationed together.

They got matching tattoos of the two dates, the donation and the transplant, with a cancer ribbon between them. Thomas told FOX10 the words “blood sisters” have “a whole different meaning now.” She has also hosted donor drives around Mobile.

The report does not say how Long’s health is today. Here is how she described that week to FOX10:

“I know how close I came to dying, and without a donor, I don’t think I’d be here.”

The part worth noticing

Neither woman had much to go on. Thomas gave without knowing who would receive it. Long received without knowing who had given. The program kept their names private for a year.

This happened far from us and had nothing to do with MeetaNeed. We are retelling it because one person had a need only a few people could meet, and another person had exactly what was needed and had said so more than a decade earlier. We told a different version of that shape in A stranger saw a Facebook post and gave him a kidney.

The only thing missing was the introduction. That is the gap we care about, where needs and neighbors meet.
